Who we are
PhotoFileSize is a product of Not Another Mate Software GmbH, an Austrian limited company registered in Dornbirn, Vorarlberg (Companies Register FN 494205y, VAT ATU73416939). The studio ships a small portfolio of focused web utilities. Full legal details are on the Imprint page.
Why this tool exists
Most "compress to 100 KB" sites silently upload your photo to a server. For passport, visa and ID applications that's a real privacy problem — your face, your name and (often) your government identifier end up on someone else's machine, in someone else's logs, behind someone else's security posture.
PhotoFileSize takes the opposite approach: every byte of your image is decoded, cropped, resized and compressed in the browser tab you have open. Nothing is uploaded. We could not exfiltrate your photo even if we wanted to, because the only network requests we make are for the site's own JavaScript and CSS.
See How it works for the technical walkthrough or our Methodology page for how we choose target sizes, encoder settings and document specs.
Our principles
- Local-first. Image processing runs in the browser via HTML5 Canvas and WebAssembly. No server-side uploads of user photos, ever.
- No dark patterns. Every tool on the site is free, fully usable without an account, and works without tracking cookies. Optional advertising is clearly labeled "Sponsored" and never sits above the editor.
- Sourced specifications. Every country-specific passport, visa and ID page links the official authority that defines the requirement. If we can't verify a number, we don't publish it.
- Corrections welcome. Document specifications change. We log every correction with a date stamp and link the source — see Editorial Standards.
Who uses PhotoFileSize
The site serves more than a million unique visitors a year. The most common use cases are:
- Applicants preparing photos for embassy or visa portals (Schengen, DS-160, USCIS, IRCC, India DigiLocker, China VAC, UK UKVI).
- Job seekers shrinking CV photos and LinkedIn headshots to platform requirements.
- Students uploading exam photos that must fit a 50 KB or 100 KB cap on government education portals.
- Designers and developers needing a quick, exact pixel resize without firing up Photoshop.
Funding & independence
The site is funded by display advertising (Google AdSense) and, in the future, an optional premium template pack. We do not accept paid placements inside our spec guides, do not endorse passport-photo printing services in exchange for fees, and do not share any user data with advertisers — Google AdSense personalisation runs entirely on its own consent flow, never on data we hold.
