Rule of thumb for photographic JPG: file size ≈ pixel count × 0.1 to 0.4 bytes per pixel, depending on quality. A 6 MP photo at quality 85 is typically 1.5–2.5 MB.

WebP at the same visual quality is 25–35 % smaller. PNG of a photo is 4–8× larger than JPG — only worth it for graphics with sharp edges or transparency.

The tool below runs a real binary search at export time, so you do not have to guess — set a target size and it finds the exact quality that fits.

FAQ

Why are JPG estimates so variable?

Photographic content (skies, skin) compresses better than busy content (foliage, fabric). The estimate is a range, not a number.

Can I get a smaller file than the estimate?

Often yes — drop dimensions or switch to WebP.
