Common resolutions: 12 MP ≈ 4032×3024 (iPhone main camera), 24 MP ≈ 6000×4000 (most Sony / Canon mirrorless), 48 MP ≈ 8000×6000 (newer iPhone Pro), 100 MP ≈ 11648×8736 (Hasselblad medium format).
For Instagram and most web use, 4 MP is more than enough. For A3 posters at 300 DPI, you need 24 MP. For a 24×36" wall poster at 300 DPI, you need 78 MP — or accept 150 DPI from a 24 MP camera.
Cropping reduces effective megapixels. Crop a 24 MP photo to a 50 % center area and you have an effective 6 MP image.
FAQ
Are more megapixels always better?
No. Sensor size, lens quality and noise matter more than headline MP count for everyday photos.
What MP do I need for a passport photo?
Less than 1 MP. A 600×600 px output is 0.36 MP. Any modern phone is overkill.
