When you need a white background
White is the default for most passport, visa and ID photos worldwide — Schengen, US, UK, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico and many more all require a plain off-white background. It's also the standard for e-commerce product photos (Amazon, Etsy listing requirements) and most professional headshots.
How the white background is applied
The canvas is filled with a flat white color first, then your cropped photo is drawn on top. If your source photo already has a clean background you can skip background removal — the existing background simply gets replaced when you crop tighter. For photos with a busy or contrasting backdrop, click "Remove background" first; an in-browser AI model isolates the subject so the whitefill shows through cleanly behind your shoulders.
Authority requirements
Different authorities define background color slightly differently — some accept "off-white", others require a specific brightness range, and a few specify exact RGB values. Privacy

Your image is decoded, cropped and re-encoded by the same JavaScript engine that runs this page — there is no upload, no temporary file on a server, and no "processed copy" cached by us afterwards. The fill color is a flat, solid white. Most authority specs allow a tolerance range; the rendered RGB is documented on each country page. If you need an exact custom RGB, switch the background mode to "Custom" inside the editor.
What happens to my image after I close the tab?
