USCIS requires a 2×2 inch (51×51 mm) color photo at 300 DPI = 600×600 px, taken within the last 30 days, with a plain white or off-white background.
The head must measure between 1 and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. Eyes must be open, looking directly at the camera, both ears visible (or at least one if hair covers an ear).
For mailed forms (I-485, N-400 paper filing) print two physical copies on photo paper. For online forms (myUSCIS), upload the JPG directly.
FAQ
Can I wear glasses?
No. USCIS banned eyeglasses in 2016 except for documented medical reasons.
What background color?
Plain white or off-white. No patterns, shadows, or other people in the frame.
Same photo for I-485 and N-400?
Yes — the 2×2 spec is identical. Just take a fresh one within 30 days of each filing.
Glossy or matte print?
Matte or glossy both accepted. Glossy is more common.
