The print standard is 8×10 inches at 300 DPI = 2400×3000 px, JPG. This is what casting directors expect physically and what the major platforms (Casting Networks, Backstage, Spotlight, Actors Access) accept as their primary upload.
For digital-first uploads, most casting sites cap thumbnails around 800×1000 px, but always upload the full 2400×3000 — the platforms generate the smaller versions for you.
Color or B&W both work in 2026. Color is the default for commercial; B&W is more common for theatrical and dramatic.
FAQ
Why 8×10 specifically?
Casting offices archive headshots in 8×10 binders. The format predates digital and stuck.
Can I use a phone photo?
Only if shot well — but most casting directors can spot phone vs studio headshots and prefer the latter.
Should I include my name on the photo?
No. The platform metadata handles it. Some agents print the name as a footer on the printed copy only.
