For engineering roles, the photo should signal "approachable, modern, focused" — not corporate stiff. A clean indoor background, soft natural light, and a simple solid-color t-shirt or button-up under a sweater works better than a suit.
LinkedIn renders the profile photo at 400×400 px on the profile and ~150×150 in feeds, so the face needs to fill 60–70% of the frame. A wide environmental shot looks like an empty thumbnail.
